After an uncharacteristic flurry of four goals in four games while Paul Lambert was being edged out of his manager’s chair to make room for Tim Sherwood, Aston Villa reverted to type last time out at Newcastle when drawing their umpteenth blank of the campaign.
The unfathomable decision to televise Sherwood’s side at home to West Brom in the Premier League will surely see heads roll at BT Sports, but here at news.bwin.com we think we’ve identified a few bets to take the taste away.
The question is, how low can they go?
Under 2.5 total goals in the match @ 1/2
This outcome has been registered a whopping 20 times in Villa’s 31 fixtures this season, while four of the matches that went over saw the Midlanders draw a blank.
Villa have, rather famously, managed to find the net just twice in their past ten Premier League matches stretching back to mid-December, although at least each of those goals have come since the start of last month.
Happily for this bet, the Baggies have found the net just twice in three away outings under Tony Pulis, and notched only once in their two top-flight road matches immediately prior to the Welshman’s appointment.
Under 1.5 goals @ 31/20
Punters who foresaw fewer than two goals in Sherwood’s first away match at Newcastle were richly rewarded thanks to John Carver’s side running out 1-0 winners.
Meanwhile, Pulis was leading his Throstles charges to a fine victory by the same scoreline at home to Southampton, shutting up shop after Saido Berahino’s second-minute strike.
Under 0.5 goals @ 11/2
Also known as 0-0, this scoreline has come up in two of West Brom’s past three away matches, having done so a couple of times earlier in the campaign at Southampton and Hull.
Villa have also posted four Premier League goalless draws this term, three times on their own patch.
As aforementioned, Sherwood’s side have failed to find the net in eight of their past ten Premier League matches, so it seems all that’s needed for this bet to come up is an off day from Pulis’ strikers.
