More than four months have passed since the last time Fernando Torres scored a league goal for Chelsea. More than just a dry patch, the Spaniard is enduring a Saharan spell, his strikes against Swansea at the end of September now a distant memory.
He did, of course, score at Old Trafford when the Blues were beaten by Manchester United earlier in the season. But rather than his goal, what is remembered of Torres’ performance in that game is the horrific open-goal miss, which was sadly indicative of his time up until now in west London.
Nevertheless, Torres is still available at 5/1 to break the deadlock when Chelsea welcome the Red Devils on Sunday and although he will almost certainly lead the Blues’ attack given Didier Drogba’s absence, the price does not necessarily appeal given his current form.
Much more tempting in the Chelsea goalscorers market is Frank Lampard, who should return from the calf injury which has kept him out for the last couple of weeks.
With a habit for scoring important goals, as well as three in his last four appearances, the 9/4 offered for Lampard to score at any time looks decent. It is also worth noting that Lampard scored in both league meetings between the sides last season.
New customers receive a free £25 bet and placing that on Lampard to score at any time will provide returns of £81.25 if the England midfielder does hit the back of net.
For United, Wayne Rooney will return from an ankle injury and you could do worse than take the 7/5 available for him to score at any time. But if you are looking for some value in the first goalscorer market then backing Antonio Valencia at 12/1 looks like an excellent option.
The Ecuadorian has been one of United’s most impressive performers in recent weeks and opened the scoring in their last away game at Arsenal.
He is always threatening when going forward and although mainly employed as a provider of goals rather than a scorer, his finishing is as clinical as that of an out and out striker.
Backing Valencia to open the scoring looks like offering the best value in what promises to be an intriguing affair at the Bridge on Sunday.
