Bolton climbed off the foot of the Premier League table thanks to goals from Mark Davies and Nigel Reo-Coker in their 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Blackburn at Ewood Park on Tuesday.
But it is their strikers that will need to start scoring if they are to continue their climb away from the bottom three.
Their latest opponents, Newcastle, have no such problems, with their in-form marksman Demba Ba adding two more to his tally in the Magpies’ loss to West Brom during the week.
Ba will be the name on most people’s lips when looking for a first scorer bet and odds of 5/1 say that he will break the deadlock at the Reebok Stadium, while you can get 7/5 on him scoring at any time in the match.
Another player of interest is Hatem Ben Arfa. The forgotten man of Tyneside is back from a horrific injury and is capable of winning games on his own.
The tricky Frenchman is 8/1 to score first or last in the match and a tempting proposition at 9/4 to score at any time. However, my advice would be wait until team news is announced before punting on him as he may have to settle for a place on the bench.
Switching back to Bolton, Kevin Davies was a surprise admission from their starting line-up against Blackburn following a dry spell in front of goal. Replacement David N’Gog was largely ineffective, though, and Davies may well prove the critics wrong with a goal on Monday if he is restored to the team by boss Owen Coyle. The former England striker can be backed at 6/1 to score the first goal of the game and 17/10 to net at any time.
For all Davies’ attributes, Ivan Klasnic is Bolton’s current top scorer with seven goals so far in the campaign and he looks the most capable Wanderers player in front of goal. His odds of 6/1 to score the first goal of the match certainly appeal given Bolton’s home advantage and that morale-boosting midweek triumph.
Our tip for the match is Klasnic to open the scoring. Football betting fans receive a free £25 bet when they sign up for a new account and placing this on the Croatian to score first would return £175 if successful.
