Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is looking to sign one more striker before the transfer window slams shut, leaving Demba Ba free to join Newcastle United.
The Senegalese striker can be backed at 5/2 to make the move back to the north east.
Mourinho is reportedly trying to convince Blues owner Roman Abramovich to loosen the purse strings in order to increase Chelsea’s firepower in attacking areas.
If he gets the green light from Abramovich, then Mourinho wants bids tabled for Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema, who was his first choice striker at Real Madrid.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney remains top of Mourinho’s wish list but with the Premier League champions unlikely to accept even a huge bid, it seems as though the Chelsea boss has thrown in the towel.
Mourinho has been significantly underwhelmed with the hand he’s been dealt in the striking department since taking over this summer.
He snapped up Samuel Eto’o from Anzi and despite his recent lack of game time at the top level, the former Inter Milan striker will be regarded as Mourinho’s main man up front.
Fernando Torres, Ba and Romelu Lukaku all struggled over the pre-season to impress the returning Chelsea boss, to a point where he fielded a team without a recognised striker in their 0-0 draw against Manchester United.
Torres proved his talents to Mourinho by scoring in Chelsea’s European Super Cup defeat on penalties to Bayern Munich and is likely to be kept on, but both Ba and Lukaku, who missed the decisive penalty against the Champions League winners, could be shipped out on deadline day.
Ba is being tracked by at least three Premier League clubs, but the favourites for his signature are his former employers Newcastle, who look in need of a boost to their forward line.
The Toon have only scored one goal in their first three Premier League matches and there is little strength in depth past strikers Papiss Cisse and the rather injury prone Loic Remy.
