Everton host Newcastle United in a Premier League season finale on Sunday and it could be a real treat as two of the most successful January transfers ever seen in the Premier League go head to head.
Toffees front man Nikica Jelavic and Papiss Demba Cisse of Newcastle have scored a combination of 23 goals since their arrivals in England just three months ago from Rangers and Freiburg respectively..
Everton have nothing of note to play for going into their final game, but bragging rights on Merseyside are up for grabs as they currently sit one point ahead of local rivals Liverpool, while Newcastle still have a chance of securing a Champions League spot for next season.
Looking at the goalscorer betting, it is no surprise to see Jelavic and Cisse heading the markets – both players are priced at 5/1 to score first and 7/5 to score at any time.
Jelavic has scored eight league goals and two in the FA Cup since heading south of the border, scoring seven in four matches before a recent run of two matches without a goal.
The Croatia striker scored braces in three Premier League games in a row in that run and his dominance of the Everton front line must justify a bet on him to score first.
The two creative forces behind the Toffees’ late-season flourish – Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar – have also chipped in with a couple of goals lately, but it is their supply line to Jelavic that will be the main Everton threat.
With Everton holding home advantage and winning six of their last seven games at Goodison Park without conceding, it would surely be foolish not to side Jelavic for our goalscorer bet.
Punters looking for an alternative to Jelavic in the Goodison Park ranks should definitely consider Marouane Fellaini.
He has recently been played further forward by boss David Moyes, sitting in behind Jelavic in a position that he plays for his country, Belgium, on a regular basis.
For a decent anytime scorer punt, Fellaini looks to be right up there with the best options on offer at the prices. He is a 4/1 shot to score in the 90 minutes.
Looking at Newcastle, we must, of course, start with the ‘Demba Boys’ up front.
Cisse has set the Premier League alight since his arrival, picking up where fellow Senegalese hitman Demba Ba left off before Christmas by firing 13 goals in 13 league appearances for his new club.
He scored two sublime goals in Newcastle’s recent 2-0 win at Chelsea – the second of which was named as Goal of the Season – and that was the third time since his arrival he had scored twice in an away game.
Ba, meanwhile, scored 16 goals in Newcastle’s first 24 matches this season but hasn’t scored in his last 13, instead turning into more of a provider to Cisse.
The former West Ham striker is priced up at 13/2 to break the deadlock on Merseyside, while he can be backed at 9/5 to notch a goal at some stage.
Hatem Ben Arfa is another viable option for Toon fans who are set on punting on one of their players to prove the difference.
Buoyed by his call-up to the preliminary France squad for Euro 2012 and some recent dazzling performances, the talented midfielder is well worth an any time goalscorer bet at odds of 11/4.
But with Everton holding home advantage and winning six of their last seven games at Goodison Park without conceding, it would surely be foolish not to side Jelavic for our goalscorer bet.
The Blues have scored ten goals in their last three home matches, so backing Jelavic to score first is the way to go here.
Recommended bet: Nikica Jelavic to score first @ 5/1
