Manchester United are now only one point behind fourth-place Manchester City and have a realistic chance of overtaking their local rivals to qualify for the Champions League.
The Red Devils have won four of their last five games to close the gap, having been six points and two places behind their noisy neighbours before that run, and are priced at 31/20 to be sat fourth or higher come the campaign’s close.
Fans of the Old Trafford outfit are set for some more good news, with a number of players close to returning from injury.
Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Phil Jones are all near the end of their road to recovery and this will give Louis van Gaal a lot more options to call upon as the season nears its close.
Shaw is back in training having been out since September with a broken leg, while Young and Jones featured in a 1-1 against Chelsea for the Under 21 side this week.
The left-back may still be a while away from returning to first-team action, but his two teammates must now be back in contention.
Having Jones and Young back together in the side will be particularly beneficial for the Red Devils, given how well they do when both are in the team.
Last season, the pair started seven of Man Utd’s last ten Premier League games and Van Gaal’s men were unbeaten in those outings, winning five.
Furthermore, they were able to beat Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in that run as they secured Champions League qualification.
Conversely, they lost all three of the games without Young and Jones in the team, being defeated by Chelsea, Everton and West Bromwich Albion.
Clearly, the English duo had the ability to make sure the Red Devils made it into Europe last season and their return is going to have a big hand in helping them do so again.
