Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat of hated rivals Manchester United not only delighted fans, but also moved them to the top of the Premier League. Their ability to keep Luis Suarez beyond transfer deadline day will only strengthen their title bid.
After the whole Arsenal £40,000,001 fiasco, Liverpool looked to have successfully rebuffed advances for their prized asset this summer. However, news that the silverware-laden, cash-happy Spanish giants Real Madrid had an interest in the Uruguayan likely had the Merseysiders thinking they were right back at square one.
But, as reported by Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, Real Madrid enquired into the biter’s availability two weeks before deadline day only to receive a rather large custard pie in their faces for their trouble before being told not to return.
Liverpool have remained, in no uncertain terms, staunch in their belief that Suarez would remain at Anfield this summer, and with just one more day to negotiate before that’s the case, are 1/10 to retain his services beyond the window.
Real Madrid are the only other side priced up in the market, and having already been rejected in their advances they remain 23/4 outsiders to own the forward on September 4.
It means that after Liverpool’s strong start to the season, where they have taken maximum points from their opening three games, the retention of Suarez will give their chances of remaining amongst the title chasers a real shot in the arm.
It has been a busy summer window for manager Brendan Rodgers, with six players signing permanently and two other first-teamers coming in on loan, and it’s hard to argue that Suarez staying wouldn’t be the biggest coup of the lot.
Liverpool’s odds to triumph in the Premier League this season have already shrunk from 25/1 to 11s and you can expect to see them skinny up even further should the window shut with Suarez still a Liverpool player.
