Fifteen years after Manchester United won the first proper treble of any side in Europe’s five major leagues, the achievement has now been mirrored in three of the rest.
Barcelona have done it in Spain, Inter in Italy and Bayern Munich in Germany, leaving France as the one league without a triple-trophy winner in their ranks.
However, one achievement that remains in the realm of dreams is the quadruple, admittedly mainly because most countries don’t have two domestic cups on offer.
That could change this season, as whatever Jose Mourinho says about Chelsea’s chances of a four-trophy haul, his Blues side have the quality required to nab it all, making the 66/1 bwin are offering a worthy bet.
On the domestic front, there are only two sides likely to prove an impediment to Chelsea in the three competitions available – Manchester City and Manchester United.
In the Capital One Cup, both of the Manchester sides have already been eliminated, while the Blues have already secured a semi-final berth. Consider that one won.
When it comes to the Premier League, Chelsea are three points clear having already played their hardest two games – away at United and City.
Diego Costa is the league’s second top scorer with 12, Cesc Fabregas the top assist provider with 11, and Eden Hazard perhaps the best player.
Chelsea have scored the most goals with 36, and conceded the joint-fewest with 13. The title already looks theirs to lose, hence the 9/20 odds that they top the pile this term.
The FA Cup will be more of a lottery, but the Blues have made the competition something of a specialty of late, winning four of the past eight editions.
As ever, the Champions League will prove the hardest nut to crack, even with Mourinho – who has won the competition twice, once as part of a treble – in the dugout.
Chelsea are fourth in betting for Europe’s premier competitions at 7/1, behind Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
The Blues also face a tough last-16 draw against Paris St Germain, even if they did oust the French champions at the quarter-final stage last term.
That said, the 66/1 price for a quadruple is far better than just 7/1, and with Chelsea looking so imperious in domestic competitions, the quadruple odds might come down to a straight wager on their Champions League chances.
