Chelsea’s auspicious record against German opposition at Stamford Bridge makes them good bets to come out on top in their first ever meeting with Bayer Leverkusen.
In five meetings with German clubs at the Bridge, the Blues have win four and drawn one and, even more impressively, have kept a clean sheet in four of the five games.
Leverkusen’s chances are further diminished by their own poor record on English soil which has seen them yet to pick up a win in seven visits.
Indeed, Robin Dutt’s side have only won twice against English opposition in all, with nine defeats recorded from 15 games.
As such, Chelsea are justifiably 21/50 favourites to get their Champions League group stage campaign off to a winning start, with a draw priced at 13/4 and a Leverkusen victory at 27/4 in bwin’s 3Way football betting marlet.
However, Leverkusen’s early-season form suggests Andre Villas-Boas’ men will not have it all their own way.
After finishing last year in second, they have picked up ten points from their opening five games of the 2011-12 season and sit in fourth.
Impressively, one of Leverkusen’s three victories came against second-placed Werder Bremen and they also drew with last season’s champions Borussia Dortmund.
With Leverkusen keeping things tight in the early stages of the campaign – they have kept three clean sheets and only conceded three goals – there are unlikely to be too many goals at the Bridge.
Indeed, on average there have been fewer than 2.5 goals in games involving Leverkusen this season, making a repeat on Tuesday a good bet at evens.
Even better value can be had if punters back Chelsea win and there to be fewer than 2.5 goals in the match at odds of 5/2.

As for the final result, the fact Chelsea have scored at least twice in their home games so far this season suggests a 2-0 win could be on the cards, with this score priced at 11/2.
