Liverpool’s principal owner John W Henry has reassured Reds fans that the squad will be significantly improved come the start of the season.
A number of the club’s targets have ended up moving to rival outfits in recent days, with Connor Wickham signing for Sunderland and Ashley Young and Phil Jones joining Manchester United.
With Gael Clichy – another player linked with a move to Merseyside – apparently on his way to Manchester City, Henry has taken to Twitter to soothe the nerves of fans worried that the club’s rebuilding programme has been derailed.
“Some things happen early and some late. The important thing is that things happen. Sometimes what you avoid is important,” he tweeted.
Liverpool are 10/1 fifth-favourites to win the Premier League, meaning a successful £25 free bet on the Reds to finish first, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £275.
Club captain Steven Gerrard has talked up Liverpool’s chances of a securing a trophy in recent days, although he believes a “few” new signings are needed before the start of the season.
Henry, director of football Damien Comolli and manager Kenny Dalglish are certainly on the lookout for new additions to keep their star midfielder happy, although the American has warned fans to forget about players approaching the end of their careers.
“Speculation on players shouldn’t include those of a certain age. We are not going to be successful by merely filling short-term needs at LFC,” he commented.
“Everything in sports is overpriced now – especially the cost of winning. But you make your choices based on a plan.”
Players tipped to arrive at Anfield in time for the club’s opening game of the season against Sunderland include Blackpool’s Charlie Adam and Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing.
Odds on Liverpool Sunderland put the Reds as 2/5 favourites, with the Black Cats available at 25/2.
