Despite the fact QPR and Sunderland go into their match having suffered weekend defeats and are languishing in the bottom half of the table, there is cause for optimism in both camps.
Rangers have acquitted themselves promisingly during their first Premier League campaign in fifteen years, while Sunderland have been able to acquire the services of Martin O’Neill as manager, a man surely capable of transforming their fortunes.
Indeed, the application and resilience in their performance at Spurs was indicative of the Irishman’s influence, even if the Black Cats ultimately succumbed to defeat at White Hart Lane.
Today’s match is one the home side will see as eminently winnable and for me there is one standout bet in the goalscorers market.
I am not ashamed to say that at the start of the season, I went on record as saying that Heidar Helguson was not a striker with sufficient quality to keep the Rs in the top flight.
Four goals in Helguson’s last five matches means he has six for the season so far and has scored twice as many goals as DJ Campbell, Jamie Mackie and Jay Bothroyd put together.
I may yet still prove to be correct in my prediction, but the Icelandic veteran is doing his best to confound my assertion.
Four goals in his last five matches means he has six for the season so far and has scored twice as many goals as DJ Campbell, Jamie Mackie and Jay Bothroyd put together.
He is priced at 2/1 to score at any time at Loftus Road and that price for an in-form striker to score in 90 minutes, at home, against a team just outside the relegation zone, looks to offer some serious value.
As far as the Black Cats go then, I like the look of the 11/2 offered for Kieran Richardson to score at any time.
He has, it is true, only scored twice this season so far, but both those goals came away from home, as have five of his last six Premier League strikes.
His pace and trickery could cause QPR’s at times static defence some serious problems and his shot is as powerful as there is in the top flight.
It is of course far from a banker, but the odds offered make the bet worthy of consideration for your loose change.
