A shock, and largely undeserved, defeat at the hands of Aston Villa has left Manchester City with a lot of work to do in the Premier League title race and recent history suggests that they’ve got reason to bemoan Everton’s Etihad visit.
The home side are obviously favourites in the match betting stakes, with bwin chalking them up at 31/50 in comparison to the unbeaten Toffees’ 4/1 with the draw at 3s.
Toffees too sticky for City
Despite having money coming out of their ears and penny-pinching Everton in a completely different fiscal boat, City have struggled to overcome this particular adversary of late.
Roberto Martinez’s men have lost just one of their last eight tussles with the Citizens, getting the better of their flush foes in nine of their past 12 meetings, the most recent coming in their 2-0 triumph at Goodison Park towards the end of the previous campaign.
Everton defence has the Martinez stamp on it
Despite this poor record, Man City can take solace in the fact that Everton’s back four hasn’t been as solid as it has in recent campaigns.
The Merseysiders’ defeats column may still contain a big, fat bagel, something that no other Premier League outfit can boast, but the defence can take little credit for this.
They’ve kept just three clean sheets in their last 10 league away days, while at least two goals have been given up to the opposition on the most recent three of those.
City have got the goal machine firing
Worryingly for the Toffees’ permeable defence and hopes of preserving their proud undefeated streak, City are banging them in at home.
In their four domestic outings, the Citizens have notched an impressive 15 goals.
This clash promises to have both goalkeepers fetching the ball from their net on numerous occasions, so backing over 3.5 goals – something that’s occurred in four of City’s six league matches under Pellegrini – at 7/4 with bwin may well be the way to go.
