After being cruelly denied by Southampton and Reading last week, we go in search of goals, goals and more goals in Manchester United v Sunderland, Queens Park Rangers v Fulham and Reading v Arsenal.
The bizarrely tight game between the Saints and the Royals last week was made more frustrating by the fact that it was the first of three fixtures scattered across the weekend, so when Everton and Tottenham produced the goods on Sunday and then Fulham and Newcastle did the same on Monday, I was rather miffed, to say the least.
Not to be miffed again though, I have selected two from the 3pm Saturday kick-offs this time around and should they come up trumps, it leaves us on edge until Monday.
I just wonder if Reading and Arsenal have any more goals left in them after their 12-goal adventure in the Capital One Cup earlier this season.
If you think they do and agree with our other selections, then why not place the free £20 bet you receive for signing up to a bwin account on this treble and be in with a chance of scooping £86.34 to put in the middle of your Christmas pudding, or just your wallet/purse?
Over 2.5 goals in Manchester United v Sunderland @ 21/50
Manchester United have scored 40 goals in just 16 games this season, but a notoriously leaky defence has led to a number of high-scoring games involving the Red Devils, including last weekend’s five-goal derby thriller at the Etihad Stadium.
Sunderland had struggled for goals earlier this season and Martin O’Neill is under increasing pressure in the hot-seat, but a three-goal win over Reading in midweek may well be just the Black Cat-alyst (tee hee) their campaign needs.
However, Wayne Rooney returned to goalscoring form last weekend and with Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez also ruining goalkeepers’ days a lot recently, the away side will do well to keep the numbers down.
What seals this game as a selection is the simple fact that 13 of the Red Devils’ 16 games in the Premier League this season have seen three goals or more, including six of seven at home.
Over 2.5 goals in QPR v Fulham @ 9/10
Fulham have an identical record to the league leaders, with only three of their 16 top-flight games failing to feature three or more strikes, and they produced again last Monday with a 2-1 win over Newcastle.
QPR have rarely been away from Goals Galore articles this season, though they haven’t always been a guaranteed winner (much like their league form). They sit bottom of the table and have only scored five times at Loftus Road.
However, they have conceded 13 and when you factor in Fulham’s poor defence, especially on the road (16 conceded in eight away games), there should be goals for both teams in this one.
Their clashes last season did include a 6-0 win for the Cottagers at Craven Cottage, but don’t expect quite that scoreline when Martin Jol’s men return to the ground they called home for a short time in the noughties.
Over 2.5 goals in Reading v Arsenal @ 3/5
Where else could we end? As alluded to above, the now-infamous 7-5 game between these two in the Capital One Cup is a big shining reason why 3/5 looks an absolute snip on there being a third of that tally or more scored on Monday night.
Granted, that included 30 minutes of extra-time, but it was not the only time this season each team has been kamikaze at the back.
The embarrassment of Tuesday’s League Cup exit at the hands of Bradford could have one of two effects on the Gunners.
They will either fall to pieces completely, or they could give Reading a spanking the likes of which are reserved especially for the first opponents after such a giant-killing.
It should also be noted that only one of the last five clashes between the two has produced less than three goals.
And that will do us for another week… happy punting!
