Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has warned his teammates that they will need to hit the ground running on their return from their summer holidays.
The Reds missed out on a place in the top four last season after a poor start to the campaign left them scrapping in the bottom half of the table.
The arrival of Kenny Dalglish as a replacement for Roy Hodgson in January sparked an upturn in fortunes and Gerrard has stressed the need to carry this momentum into the new campaign.
Indeed, he even spoke optimistically about the club’s chances of winning the title when interviewed following the publication of the Premier League fixtures for the new season.
Liverpool are 10/1 fifth-favourites to pick up the Premier League trophy with bwin, putting them behind Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.
A successful £25 free bet on the Reds to win the league, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £275.
Should Liverpool be in with a chance of the title come the end of the year Gerrard believes three points against Sunderland in the season opener at Anfield is a must, as is a strong performance at the Emirates in game two.
“Hopefully we will have a few new signings in and we can start the season with three points which would give us the confidence to then go and get a good result at Arsenal. That is a difficult place to go and we haven’t won there for a while,” Gerrard commented.
“It’s important to hit the ground running if you want to compete for the title. You can’t afford any slip-ups early on.
“It’s a tough first two games but I’m really looking forward to them and I think we can get two positive results.”
Liverpool have already signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and appear close to bringing in Udinese defender Cristian Zapata.
