Steven Gerrard hopes that the financial backing afforded by Liverpool’s new owners will help the club bridge the gap to title favourites Manchester United.
The Red Devils secured an historic 19th top-flight league crown last term which moved them one ahead of Liverpool, who have 18.
For Gerrard it was a painful reminder of how United have overtaken his side since the Merseysiders last clinched the title in 1990.
However, the 31-year-old believes that the big-money signing of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland could be a signal that things are about to change.
“As a Liverpool fan and a player it’s frustrating when you see your arch-rivals lifting trophies but you’ve got to give credit where it’s due. They’ve won it, they’ve overtaken us,” said the 31-year-old.
“Now the challenge for us is to equalise. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got a squad capable of going into the season and competing with Manchester United.
“It’s a big statement by the club getting a big signing in early and now we’re watching anxiously for a few more to follow. It’s exciting times.”
Liverpool are 9/1 fifth-favourites to win the title this season with bwin, putting them behind Manchester United (33/20), Chelsea (9/4). Manchester City (7/2) and Arsenal 6/1.
A successful £25 free bet on them to win the league, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £250.
Those looking for Liverpool bets could also back the Reds to finish in the top four at 5/4.
Other players tipped to follow in the footsteps of Henderson and move to Anfield include Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing, who was recently pictured alongside Andy Carroll clutching a Liverpool scarf.
