Fulham have had the measure of Newcastle in recent seasons although they are underdogs going into today’s fixture at St James’ Park.
The Magpies are 11/10 to win the game in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with the draw at 9/4 and Fulham at 49/20.
Having been fancied to make a strong start after coming into the new season match sharp following their Europa League qualification campaign in the summer, Fulham have been surprisingly sluggish out of the blocks.
They started things off with a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa at Craven Cottage before losing 2-0 away to in-form Wolves.
However, the Lilywhites will be buoyed by the knowledge that they are undefeated in four games against their hosts today and have kept clean sheets in their last three meetings.
They did the double over Newcastle in the 2008-09 season before securing a 0-0 draw at St James’ Park in November 2010 and winning 1-0 at Craven Cottage in February.
With Newcastle having scored just one goal in their two league matches so far this season, then betting on Fulham to keep another clean sheet could be a good option at odds of 13/5.
However, the better option could be to have a punt on there to be fewer than 2.5 goals in the match at odds of 7/10.
A £25 stake on this would return £42.50 if the bet proved successful, and new customers can claim a free £25 bet if they sign up for a bwin account.
The bet could be a good one because none of the four league games Fulham and Newcastle have been involved in this season have seen more than two goals.
If one team is going to edge it, it is more likely to be Newcastle than Fulham despite the good record of Martin Jol’s men against the Magpies in recent times.
Fulham’s away record was poor last season and shows no signs of improving this time around, while Newcastle scored more than two goals a game at St James’ Park on average in the 2010-11 campaign.
With this in mind, a final score of 1-0 to Newcastle looks a good prospect at odds of 27/4.
