Former Manchester United defender Arthur Albiston has urged Sir Alex Ferguson to strengthen his midfield before the end of the summer.
United manager Ferguson has already been busy this transfer window, with Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea all brought in to boost the club’s chances of retaining their Premier League title.
The Red Devils are favourites to win the league in bwin’s title betting market at 7/4, putting them ahead of Chelsea (12/5) and neighbours Manchester City (7/2).
A successful £25 free bet on Man Utd to finish first, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £68.75.
Albiston praised Ferguson for moving quickly to replace the retired Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar with Jones and De Gea, although he noted that there is plenty of work still to be done.
Specifically, Albiston believes that the retirement of Paul Scholes and the departure of Owen Hargreaves has left United light in midfield.
Speaking to the official Man Utd website, the MUTV pundit said: “I’m sure the manager’s always on the lookout for players in every position but if he could get another midfielder in this summer, I think that would help him because we’ve lost not only Scholes but Owen Hargreaves as well.
“So Sir Alex might be trying to get another body in that department to take the weight off Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Anderson.
“I think Sir Alex will be looking at his midfield, and I’m sure we’d all like another Paul Scholes, a young Paul Scholes, to come into the side.”
United kick off the defence of their Premier League title with a trip to the Hawthorns on Saturday, 13th August.
Unsurprisingly, bwin’s West Brom Man Utd betting market has the Red Devils as strong 1/2 favourites, with the home team priced at 11/2.
