Manchester City have spent much of the time since their shock Capital One Cup loss to Newcastle sweating on the fitness of Yaya Toure and David Silva, both of whom left the pitch early on Wednesday night, but the good news is that the latter is expected to be fit to face Manchester United.
Sky Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Silva will be missing the contest, saying: “David has some ligament damage and he will be out for three weeks. It is a blow because he is a very important player but we have a good squad and we have the players to replace him.”
With Samir Nasri waiting in the wings to provide creativity behind the strikers he’s got a point.
However, like-for-like replacing Toure would have been an altogether less simple task.
Luckily for the Chilean’s it’s not one that will take up too much of his headspace ahead of the Sunday blockbuster.
He suggested as much when he told reporters “we will assess it tomorrow but I think Yaya will be all right.”
It’s heartening news for the hosts as they try to arrest a slump that has seen them shipping goals left, right and centre on a run that now stretches to three games without a win.
Especially so given his knack of finding the back of the net in the fixture over recent seasons.
Toure has struck three times in the last four derbies against one of some of his favourite Premier League foes, no City player can match his total in that timeframe.
Only Fulham have had more cause to rue the towering Ivorian’s birth across his entire football career.
Yet despite his omnipresence on the scoreboard in the clash, Yaya can be backed to hit his fifth goal against United at a seventh-favourite’s 19/10, or 6/1 to find the net first or last.
