Manchester United might have a new manager on the first day of next season, but will they also have an old player back? Reports this morning suggest Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo could well return to Old Trafford four years after leaving the club, and bwin have made the Red Devils favourites to re-sign the Portuguese forward, with Chelsea also near the top of the market.
United are 7/5 to sign Ronaldo, who enjoyed six incredibly successful years with the club, winning three Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup and one League Cup.
His affection for the club has not diminished since departing in 2009 – the way he spoke about his former employers (and didn’t celebrate his goals) during Real Madrid’s Champions League victory over United this season proved his love affair with everybody at Old Trafford remains strong.
Whether Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure will have any bearing on Ronaldo’s future remains to be seen, and the former Sporting Lisbon forward would be re-joining a very different club to one he left for a record £80 million.
But with the Stretford End still doting on him for all he did at the club, the sway of United could prove decisive.
Inevitably, big-spending Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with Ronaldo, and bwin go 3/1 that he joins the revolution happening in the French capital.
Interestingly, given that Jose Mourinho looks set to take over at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have been priced up at 6/1 to sign Ronaldo, who may fancy continuing to work with the Special One.
United’s arch rivals Manchester City are 33/1 to make a sensational swoop for their old foe, while Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola next season, are 40/1 to sign Ronaldo.
Barcelona are 80/1 to make Ronaldo cross the El Clasico divide, while if you think that he will still be a Real Madrid player come 1st September, you can back CR7 to stay put at 7/10.
