Arsenal might be in the midst of a chronic midfielder shortage, but they are still priced at evens to beat Newcastle in bwin’s 3Way football betting market.
Whether or not Cesc Fabregas moves to Barcelona and Samir Nasri leaves for Manchester City in the coming days, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is unable to call on either player for his side’s trip to St James’ Park.
Fabregas is short of match fitness after sustaining a hamstring injury in pre-season, while Nasri reported back sick following a mid-week friendly with France.
To make matters worse, Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby are also injured, while Denilson was allowed to join Sao Paulo on loan earlier in the summer.
That said, there are still a number of factors which suggest betting on Arsenal will be more profitable than backing a Newcastle victory at odds of 53/20 or a draw at 9/4.
Firstly, there is the fact that Arsenal were the best team on the road in the Premier League last season, earning 31 points from their 19 matches and scoring just over two goals a game on average.
With this in mind, punters could back the Gunners to score at least two goals tomorrow at odds of 91/100, or, given Newcastle struck more than twice in their average home game, bet on there to be more than 4.5 goals in the match at odds of 9/2.
Furthermore, Arsenal can call on Robin van Persie to boost their victory chances.
The Dutchman has scored in every league game of 2011 and is priced at 11/10 to continue this run in the north-east.
A successful £25 free bet on Van Persie to score against Newcastle, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £52.50.
Then there is Newcastle’s position to consider.
The departures of Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique over the summer, the apparent failure to reinvest the Andy Carroll transfer fee, the Joey Barton saga and rumours of dressing-room unrest have left an air of uncertainty on the Toon.
With this in mind, punters should consider backing Arsenal to put last season’s St James’ Park nightmare behind them and get their Premier League campaign underway with a win.
