The first meeting between Stoke and QPR at the Britannia Stadium since November 2007 takes place on Saturday, with the home side odds-on to pick up all three points.
Stoke triumphed 3-1 four years ago and, while a similar margin of victory would not be a surprise, it will take an inspired second half performance from the Potters to establish a two goal cushion.
This is because Tony Pulis’ side have hit the back of the net just twice before the interval in their 11 Premier League matches so far this season, suggesting any goals they score will not come until late on in the match.
Stoke actually sit bottom of a table ranking the first half performances of the Premier League’s 20 teams.
But it is a different story in the second half, with Stoke the eighth best team in the league according to their performance after the break.
By way of contrast, QPR would be in the relegation zone if judged on their second half performances alone having scored just four times after the interval and conceded 11.
With this in mind, a punt on Stoke to win the second half might be a better option than betting on a win for the Potters over 90 minutes.
At odds of 11/10, a successful £25 free bet on Stoke to win the second half would return £52.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
Another good bet could be on the match to contain fewer than 2.5 goals at odds of 7/10.
Four of the five games at the Britannia have featured under 2.5 goals this season and only fans at the Hawthorns, home of West Brom, have seen fewer than the nine goals scored at their own ground witnessed by Stoke supporters this campaign.
As QPR are hardly prolific away from home either – they have scored just five goals in the five games on their travels – there seems little reason to suggest that there will be more goals than usual in the Potteries on Saturday.
With this in mind, back Stoke to come out on top of a low-scoring encounter, with Pulis’ side likely to have too much for Neil Warnock’s men having avoided defeat against Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea at home this season.
The Potters are priced at 3/4 for the victory in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with the draw at 49/20 and a QPR success at 15/4.
