When reports Manchester United were keen to sign Barcelona star Neymar began filtering through to the gossip columns the football universe heaved a deep, collective sigh.
Why would the Brazilian, fresh from a treble with the Camp Nou club, consider a move to an Old Trafford side still rebuilding post Sir Alex Ferguson?
Yet reports from Brazil suggest that the Red Devils have indeed tabled an offer for the Blaugrana star – one that dwarfs the current transfer record.
Globo Esporte claim United have submitted an offer worth €190m (the value of Neymar’s release clause) when their executive director Ed Woodward, only to have it turned down by Barcelona.
However the deal is far from dead in the water according to the website, which suggests discussion between the two clubs will continue once the transfer window closes.
Neymar is currently 5/2 to be a United player by September 1, 2016.
