Adnan Januzaj burst onto the Premier League scene with two goals for Manchester United as they saw off Sunderland 2-1 and his performance should encourage punters to attack the enormous 6/1 on United to successfully defend their league title with confidence.
United, who won the league by 11 points last season, are only fourth favourites after a slow start but results are guaranteed to pick up over the next few months as Januzaj’s creative talent is the missing piece to the United jigsaw.
Januzaj is the perfect candidate to play the creative midfielder role
Despite United’s continued dominance of English football, their inability to sign a creative central midfielder has been a problem.
Michael Carrick’s brilliance at the base of the midfield and Robin van Persie’s punishing finishing ability papered over the cracks to a certain extent last season but the lack of midfield guile and imagination has been there for all to see since Moyes took the reins.
That was the case until the United boss decided to unleash Januzaj, who had starred in pre-season, against Sunderland.
A uniquely gifted footballer
The range and dynamism of his passing, added to his quick feet on the ball and ruthless eye for goal supplemented a new dimension to United’s attacking play on what was his full debut.
Whether he’s darting from off the wing or gliding through the middle, the 18-year-old possesses the confidence and presence to have huge effect on games – much in the same mould as Wayne Rooney did when he burst onto the scene.
Increases the supply line for Van Persie
The rise of Januzaj will also be music to the ears of the Dutchman.
In truth, he has struggled so far under Moyes.
Starved of decent service from midfield, last season’s Premier League top scorer has been dropping deep and trying to influence the play from wide, without much success.
His return of just three goals in six Premier League games will undoubtedly be improved with Januzaj’s incisive build-up play acting as ammunition.
