Season So Far
After four wins from their first four games in all competitions, hopes were high that Tottenham could claim north London bragging rights away to Arsenal, but the 1-0 loss may curb the enthusiasm brought about by seven summer signings at a combined cost of over £100m.
Andre Villas-Boas needs to get his side playing as a team again and 1-0 wins against Crystal Palace and Swansea will have given the Portuguese manager confidence ahead of league clashes with Norwich and Cardiff.
As aforementioned, Tottenham kicked off their league campaign strongly with two wins out of two, but both games were settled by a second-half penalty as Villas-Boas’ men struggled to convert their attacking dominance into goals.
They had at least 15 shots in both games and an inability to exploit opportunities could see them drawing another first-half blank against Norwich, with the 10/3 on draw HT/Spurs win FT looking good to come up for the third time this season.
Based on the early evidence, you won’t go far wrong backing 1-0 to the Lilywhites at 13/2 when Norwich visit London. All of Spurs’ league games so far this season have been settled as a one-goal win, as have Chris Hughton’s team’s last two – their loss at Hull and home win over Southampton.
However, a more versatile bet would be to back under 1.5 goals at 31/10 as, of the six league games featuring the teams so far, the Canaries’ opening day 2-2 draw with Everton was the only match that exceeded that mark.
The £26m paid to Valencia for striker Roberto Soldado looked increasingly good value as the transfer window drew to a close and the Spaniard is hard to oppose for his third first-goal of the season.
At a bigger price, centre-half Jan Vertonghen – who found the back of the net four times in his first Premier League campaign and always poses danger from Tottenham set-pieces – is worth a punt in the ‘to score at any time’ market.
Other Notable Trends
Spurs have only beaten Norwich once in four attempts since the Canaries returned to the Premier League in 2011, drawing 1-1 home and away last season and going down 2-1 at White Hart Lane 17 months ago.
