Manchester United go into their crucial derby with Manchester City as evens favourites to pick up all three points, although the Citizens’ early season form suggests they have the firepower to outscore their hosts and earn a rare victory at Old Trafford at odds of 11/4.
City are top-scorers in the league with 27 goals and while United have only conceded six in their first eight league matches, the fact their goalkeeper has saved more shots than any other in the league reveals a soft underbelly which the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva will be keen to exploit.
However, for City to win the game manager Roberto Mancini will have to be bold with his team selection and pick players who can put United’s defence under pressure, even if this compromises his own side’s defensive solidity and ends in a highscoring slugfest.
Samir Nasri is a prime example of someone who can make things happen in the final third, although the likelihood is that Mancini will overlook the Frenchman and choose a side able to keep things tight and claim a point but without the flair necessary to secure an away win.
With this in mind, a draw could be the best bet in bwin’s 3Way football betting market at odds of 9/4.
Recent history certainly supports the theory that the game will be a low-scoring affair rather than a goal-ridden thriller, with only one of the last four competitive games between the two teams containing three goals or more, which points towards an under 2.5 goals bet at odds of 19/20.
Meanwhile, of the last nine meetings which have produced a decisive result either way, only two games have been won by a margin of more than one goal.
As such, those who think either United or City will win the game could consider backing a winning margin of a single goal, with this bet available at odds of 27/20.
However, with Mancini likely to set his team up to avoid defeat a low-scoring draw remains the best option, and 1-1 looks tempting at 21/4.
This allows for the teams’ status as the two best attacking and defensive sides in the division, with both likely to hit the back of the net while still finding it hard to replicate the free-scoring form they have shown in the league up until now.
