Stewart Downing could inadvertently decide on the destination of Wigan star Charles N’Zogbia.
The Frenchman has attracted the interest of a host of Premier League clubs thanks to the key role he played in helping the Latics to avoid relegation to the Championship last season.
However, his departure may be dependent on the transfer of England winger Downing.
The Aston Villa flyer is set on a big-money move to Anfield, with Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish keen to add to his options in wide areas.
Should the transfer to Merseyside go through, then Villa are expected to target N’Zogbia as Downing’s replacement.
Alternatively, Liverpool may turn to N’Zogbia if they fail to prise Downing away from Villa Park.
Having said that, Liverpool and Aston Villa aren’t the only clubs chasing N’Zogbia, with the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton also rumoured to be interested.
With N’Zogbia eager to move on and with just a year to run on his current deal, the 25-year-old’s departure appears inevitable and will put huge pressure on Wigan boss Roberto Martinez to find a worthy replacement.
It is improbable that Martinez will be able to attract a player of similar calibre to the DW Stadium, meaning Wigan’s relegation odds are likely to shorten in the near future.
Wigan are already 7/4 joint-third favourites to go down, meaning a successful £25 free bet, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £68.75.
The Latics’ first match of the 2011-12 Premier League season will be at the DW Stadium against newly-promoted Norwich City, with bwin’s Wigan Norwich football betting market pointing towards a home win.
Norwich are second-favourites to go down at 3/5, with Swansea favourites at 53/100.
