Could Luis Suarez be staying in England after all? That is what Liverpool fans would like to hear – if it wasn’t for the fact that Manchester City are reportedly about to rival Real Madrid in the race to sign the Uruguayan after balking at the cost of Chelsea target Edinson Cavani.
Suarez is currently on international duty at the Confederations Cup, where he has helped Uruguay reach the semi-finals, but the speculation about his future has refused to go away – mainly because the player himself has been constantly quoted saying he wants a move away from Anfield.
And not just Anfield, but England, with Suarez attempting to blame the British press for forcing him out of the Premier League – which makes today’s link with City an interesting one.
New Citizens boss Manuel Pellegrini is said to be looking at Suarez after the club decided against a move for Suarez’s international teammate, Napoli striker Cavani, who has a release clause of £53 million.
And it is thought that City could try to take advantage of Suarez’s unhappiness and launch a bid of their own for the wantaway striker, offering him Champions League football and the possibility of winning major trophies.
Yet bwin remain unmoved by the link, making Manchester City 22/1 to sign Suarez.
Real Madrid are still the strong odds-on favourites to capture the former Ajax man, but their price has drifted slightly from 7/20 to 9/20 after Reds boss Brendan Rodgers stated that the club will do their utmost to keep the striker.
“The club is in complete control of the situation and for me, there is no change,” Rodgers said. “I’m quite relaxed about it.
“We are in a situation where we’ve got a player who we don’t want to lose. We’re trying to build something here and he’s a very important part of that and because of the type of player he is he will always give his best.
“What I know is that the support Luis has had from the people here in Liverpool, the city and the football club, has been phenomenal and I know he feels that and respects that.”
Bwin make it a 7/5 chance, cut from 8/5, that Suarez remains a Liverpool player beyond the end of the summer transfer window.
He is upwards of 16/1 to sign for another club.
