With Edinson Cavani courted by Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea, it appears that Napoli are planning to replace one £50 million rated Uruguayan striker with another as reports today linked the Italians with a move for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
The Serie A club, who have just appointed former Anfield chief Rafa Benitez as their new manager, are resigned to losing their coveted Uruguay striker Cavani, who has a £53 million release clause in his contract and is wanted by Europe’s top clubs.
Cavani has done little to dispel the notion that he is on his way from Napoli, talking up the prospect of joining Real Madrid by saying: “I am very calm about my future. Madrid are a great club and every player dreams of playing there. So far, however, officially, nobody has spoken directly with me to make me an offer.”
And with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis admitting he is powerless to stop Cavani leaving, Benitez’s answer to losing his top-scoring Uruguayan appears to be to sign Liverpool’s version.
Reports today suggested that Napoli, armed with the money that they will receive from the sale of Cavani, will try and tempt the Reds’ No.7 away from Merseyside to Serie A.
They might be encouraged by Suarez’s apparent determination to leave Anfield, which he disingenuously blames on the British press, but bwin don’t share much optimism that Benitez will get his man: Napoli have been priced up at 10/1 to sign the former Ajax man.
Instead, bwin still make Real Madrid the firm favourites to sign Suarez this summer, going 7/20 that the Spanish giants complete the transfer before 1st September.
Liverpool are 8/5 to hang on to Suarez beyond the end of the summer window, while he is 16/1 and bigger to sign for any other club.
