With just over two weeks to go before their big derby match at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he is not surprised to see Manchester City as his side’s nearest rivals at the top of the Premier League table.
After seven league games the city rivals have both recorded six wins and a draw, with United only top because they have scored 24 goals to City’s 23.
The Citizens’ impressive start to the season has seen their odds on finishing first slashed to 9/4 from 7/2 in June, moving them to second-favourites ahead of Chelsea in bwin’s title betting market.
Nevertheless, a successful £25 free bet on Man City to top the table at the end of the season would still return £81.25, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
Far from being surprised by this development, Ferguson says he could see it coming.
“I’ve said all along that would happen,” he told Inside United.
“They are a good team and they were always going to be there or thereabouts.
“We just have to make sure we are ready for City when we meet them.”
United, 19/20 favourites to win their second Premier League crown in succession, are also odds on to beat City when the two sides meet on 23rd October.
A draw is priced at 12/5 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with an away win for City at 3/1.
Meanwhile, Ferguson says he also foresaw recent signing Sergio Aguero being a big hit at Easlands.
“Sergio Aguero was bound to do well, coming into the Premier League, because he is such a goal threat around the penalty box. David Silva is also a very good player,” he told the publication.
Aguero is 3/1 second favourite to finish the Premier League season as top goalscorer, putting him just one place behind Manchester United adversary Wayne Rooney, a 7/4 shot.
