bwin’s bookies can’t see Edinson Cavani playing for any club other than Chelsea next season after the west London side were installed as strong favourites to sign the Napoli forward, ahead of Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Cavani, who struck 29 league goals as he helped Napoli to a second-place finish in Serie A last season, has long been linked with a move away from the Azzurri, but speculation over his future has never been stronger amid reports that Chelsea have lodged a mega-money bid for the striker.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who has just appointed former Chelsea interim boss Rafa Benitez as manager, has confirmed that the Blues are interested in taking Cavani to bolster the squad of Jose Mourinho, who was today officially unveiled as the next Blues boss, and was philosophical about the prospect of one of his star players leaving for the Premier League.
De Laurentiis said “Chelsea are interested in Cavani and they will call me soon. I’m very happy that his brother [and agent] has said that he will stay, but if he did decide to go to Chelsea, we would take time out to think and replace him with people worthy of replacing him.”
Chelsea are reported to have made a bid worth just short of the £54 million release clause in Cavani’s contract and bwin are convinced the Uruguayan, who has scored more goals than any other player in Serie A during his three years at Napoli, will be at Stamford Bridge come 1st September – he is 3/20 to sign for the Blues before then.
Real Madrid are second favourites to land Cavani, with bwin going 4/1 that the Spanish giants sign the Uruguayan, while Manchester City, who have been linked with a move for the striker in the past, are 5/1 to secure his signature.
If you think that Cavani will end up anywhere else, you will be getting a big price: he is 28/1 to sign for French champions Paris Saint-Germain, 33/1 to sign for Champions League winners Bayern Munich and 40/1 to sign for David Moyes at Manchester United, with all other sides 50/1 and bigger.
If you think that Napoli can fend off the interest in their prize asset, you can get a big-looking 19/4 that Cavani remains with the Italian club beyond the end of the summer transfer window.
