Real Madrid are now the new odds-on favourites with bwin to sign Edinson Cavani after the father of the Napoli star admitted that the Spanish giants are his son’s club of preference this summer – rather than Chelsea and Manchester City.
It had been thought that Chelsea were the frontrunners for the forward, who scored 29 league goals as he helped Napoli to a second place finish in Serie A last term, and bwin had gone a short as 3/20 that the Uruguay star would end up at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Even Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis admitted Chelsea’s interest and with Cavani himself expressing his pleasure at the thought of playing under either Jose Mourinho or in-coming Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini, it seemed to be a straight shoot-out between the Premier League rivals.
But Cavani’s father Luis Cavani has put all that in doubt, saying that his son has his eyes on a move to the Spanish capital.
“Cavani’s intention is to play for Madrid,” Luis Cavani told Futboleros. “He is excited about it and is very willing to see it through. He has told the family in private that he wants to join Real Madrid but if he declares it publicly it will annoy Napoli.
“There has been contact with Real Madrid’s lawyers and now we are waiting for the two clubs to meet. I hope it happens and that talks take place as soon as possible. Who wouldn’t want to play for Real Madrid?”
Those comments have been enough for bwin to slash the price on the Napoli star moving to the Bernabeau from 7/2 to 3/4 favourites, pushing the price on a transfer to Chelsea from 3/20 to 19/20.
Manchester City are 15/4 to sign Cavani, while Napoli, who have just appointed Rafa Benitez as manager, are 19/4 to keep hold of the £50million rated forward beyond the summer transfer window.
It is 28/1 and bigger for Cavani to end up at any other club.
