Chelsea have been cut in price to sign Wayne Rooney this summer after fresh reports suggested that the Manchester United star would prefer a move to Stamford Bridge rather than Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona.
Speculation about Rooney’s future has been rife since towards the end of last season when then-United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that the former Everton forward had handed in a transfer request – the second time he has asked to leave Old Trafford in two-and-a-half years.
But with Ferguson now retired, it is up to incoming boss David Moyes, who handed Rooney his professional debut 11 years ago when in charge at Goodison Park, to decide if the player has a future at the club.
The pair were due to meet today to discuss the situation and ahead of that meeting reports emerged that of all the clubs that are tracking the unsettled England striker, Chelsea are Rooney’s preferred destination should he decide to leave Manchester as the prospect of working with new Blues boss Jose Mourinho would be too attractive to turn down.
And with reports of a £20 million bid in the offing, Chelsea have been cut from 19/4 to 4/1 to sign Rooney this summer.
In other words, Blues fans who register today and put their free £20 bet on Rooney heading to Stamford Bridge this summer would pocket winnings of £100 if the move happens.
London rivals Arsenal are still the 7/2 joint-favourites – alongside big-spending French champions Paris Saint-Germain – to sign the 27-year-old after Arsene Wenger made no secret of his admiration of the player, who has won four Premier League titles and one Champions League during his nine years at Old Trafford.
Real Madrid are 5/1 to sign Rooney this summer, with Barcelona a 9/1 chance and any other club 18/1 and bigger.
It is 4/5 that Rooney stays at Manchester United beyond 3rd September.
