Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have received a boost in their bid to sign Edinson Cavani after Napoli boss Rafael Benitez admitted that he will be powerless to prevent the striker leaving if the club receives an “irresistible” offer.
Cavani is one of the hottest properties in world football after scoring 104 goals in all competitions for the Serie A outfit in the past three seasons and has a £53 million buy-out clause in his contract.
Benitez is determined to keep the Uruguay hitman at the San Paolo but conceded that he will be free to leave if a mega bid is lodged by either Chelsea, United, City or fellow suitors Real Madrid.
“We want Cavani to stay at Napoli. We would be really happy if that’s how it works out,” the former Liverpool boss told Corriere dello Sport.
“If he leaves then it would only be because someone has matched the release clause or comes up with an irresistible offer.
“Cavani knows how much he is loved and how valuable he is to the city and to the team.”
With Uruguay now out of the Confederations Cup, Cavani will look to resolve his future in the coming weeks and Chelsea are currently the strong 9/20 favourites with bwin to snap him up this summer.
Real Madrid, who have also been linked with a move for Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, are next in the betting at 3/1, with a price of 6/1 available on Cavani joining Manuel Pellegrini’s revolution at City.
United are as long as 9/1 to secure his services before September 4th, while we go 11/2 that Benitez gets his wish and has Cavani at his disposal beyond the end of the current transfer window.
