The image of Manchester City as a club travelling serenely on the path to glory might have been shattered in Bavaria on Tuesday but the Citizens are still heavy favourites to return to winning ways against Blackburn on Saturday.
Edin Dzeko’s public show of dissent and Carlos Tevez’s apparent refusal to take to the field compounded a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich, which was City’s first competitive defeat of the season.
Despite this, Roberto Mancini’s men are 3/5 on to bounce back and beat Blackburn at Ewood Park, with the home side priced at 9/2 to record a victory in bwin’s 3Way football betting market and a draw at 11/4.
Blackburn’s last match at Ewood Park ended in a 4-3 victory over Arsenal, although the fortuitous nature of the win suggests regular victories over the league’s biggest teams should not be expected on the back of this solitary success.
Indeed, Rovers’ win over the Gunners can be seen as something of an aberration given their other results in the league this season, which have seen the Lancashire side slump to four defeats and a draw.
Worryingly for Blackburn boss Steve Kean, the Arsenal match was the only time his team have scored more than a single goal in a Premier League match this season.
Given Man City have the division’s second-best defence, Blackburn’s attacking record is unlikely to strike fear into their hearts and Joe Hart and co will be confident of keeping a clean sheet at odds of 7/5.
However, their ambitions will not stop there. Even if Mancini decides to do without Dzeko as well as the recently-suspended Tevez for the fixture, he can still call on in-form strikers Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero.
Balotelli has scored two goals in three appearances so far this season, while Aguero has eight goals in his six Premier League outings to date.
With this in mind, a bet on Man City to win 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 at odds of 11/5 looks safe.
And punters who think Blackburn will suffer from a Man City backlash on the back of their German debacle could back the Citizens to win 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0 at 13/1.
