Wigan are a team in a false position. So says Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who watched his table-toppers lose to the Latics at the DW Stadium last Wednesday.
If asked, the managers of Liverpool, Stoke and Chelsea would be inclined to agree, with Wigan having also beaten the Reds and the Potters in the last three weeks while being denied all three points against the Blues at Stamford Bridge because of some controversial refereeing decisions.
Even so, Arsenal are 1/4 favourites to beat the relegation-threatened Latics in this evening’s match at the Emirates Stadium.
This leaves the draw at 9/2 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with a Wigan success at 21/2.
But with the Gunners having lost to QPR two weeks ago and, despite a run of difficult fixtures, Wigan being ranked as high as sixth in a form table based on the last six games, surely there is value in betting on a draw or Wigan win in the double chance market?
After all, at odds of 29/10 a successful £25 free bet on a draw or Wigan win would return £97.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
It should not be forgotten that the Gunners have won the seven home fixtures since their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates on January 22nd.
However, Wigan could find Arsenal a far tougher nut to crack than a woeful Liverpool, a Stoke team running out of gas, a Chelsea outfit still finding their feet under a new manager and a Man Utd side having an off day.
Not that this is to diminish the achievements of Wigan and their manager Roberto Martinez, who deserves huge credit for remaining positive in the bleakest of circumstances and masterminding his team’s revival.
But it should not be forgotten that the Gunners have won the seven home fixtures since their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates on January 22nd.
They have a strong home record against Wigan, too – the Latics have not so much as scored a goal at the Emirates since February 2007, with the six matches since then ending in wins to nil for Arsenal.
Given Arsene Wenger’s men have kept five clean sheets in their last seven and beat the Latics 4-0 at the DW Stadium earlier in the season, it could therefore be worth overlooking the Latics’ claims and betting on another win to nil for the Gunners.
At odds of 19/20, a successful £25 free bet on this outcome will return £48.75.
One other option to consider is on a 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 victory for the Gunners at 8/5.
While a win may prove beyond Wigan against such in-form opponents and while playing away from home, their impressive showings cannot be completely overlooked.
With this in mind, back them to keep the score down instead of going for a 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0 win for Arsenal in the multiple correct score market at odds of 23/4.
Arsenal to win to nil @ 19/20
Arsenal to win 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 @ 8/5
