Even though Wigan haven’t lost at home to Arsenal in two years and got back to winning ways last weekend it would still be a shock if Robin van Persie failed to lead the Gunners to success on Saturday.
Europe’s best defenders have failed to contain the Dutchman this year so there’s no reason not to bet on him to score against a rearguard who’ve already shipped 26 goals this season.
Arsenal’s skipper is 3/4 to score anytime against Wigan but there’s more value to be had in backing him to score two or more at 11/4 with bwin.
However, the best bet may be on Van Persie scoring either first or last, both of which are at the same price as the Dutchman to score two or more.
Van Persie has scored the first goal in five of Arsenal’s matches this year and the last goal on four occasions.
New customers using the £25 free bet they receive when registering with bwin would win £93.75 if Van Persie does score the first goal.
With 14 goals in this fixture over the past three seasons some of Arsenal’s less frequent scorers should also be able to get in on the act.
Summer signing Gervinho has struggled to adapt to the Premier League but the defensive setup of Roberto Martinez’s side is reminiscent of many teams in Ligue 1.
This should make him feel at home, making the Ivorian worth considering at 6/5 to score anytime.
Defender Thomas Vermaelan has the second best goals per game ratio of any Gunner and is the most likely player outside of ‘Reliant Robin’ to get his name on the scoresheet again at odds of 9/2.
Of greater concern to Arsene Wenger will be whether the Belgian stopper can hold together a defence which has crumbled on their last two visits to Wigan, conceding four goals in the last ten minutes of those games.
If Wigan can again put pressure on Arsenal late on, then expect Franco Di Santo to take advantage having got back on the goal trail with the winner against Sunderland.
The Argentine is enjoying his best-ever goalscoring season and is good value at 8/1 to get the last goal again this weekend, while midfielder Ben Watson is also worth considering at 14/1 in that market having scored in this fixture in each of the last two seasons.
