Sunderland’s encouraging opening-day draw against Liverpool is now a distant memory as successive defeats against Newcastle and Brighton and a 0-0 stalemate with Swansea means pressure is mounting on the Black Cats to pick up their first win of the season.
Their next opportunity to do so is against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, although they are 9/2 underdogs to win in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with a draw priced at 13/5 and a Chelsea success at 13/20.
Money recouped from the sales of Darren Bent and Jordan Henderson this year enabled manager Steve Bruce to radically overhaul the Sunderland squad over the summer with the aim of improving on last season’s tenth-placed finish.
However, the arrival of 11 new players has not coincided with an upturn in fortunes, meaning Sunderland have now won just one of their last five matches and three of their last ten.
Meanwhile, new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has overseen a draw and two wins in his three league games in charge and will be looking to build on the Blues’ record of winning nine of their last ten games against the Black Cats.
Indeed, barring a shock 3-0 triumph at Stamford Bridge last year, Sunderland have played the part of cannon fodder for Chelsea in recent times, with the Blues having put at least three goals past the Black Cats in five of their last six encounters.
Chelsea’s attack is yet to fire on all cylinders this season but with a wealth of attacking talent now at Villas-Boas’ disposal following the arrivals of Juan Mata and Raul Meireles, the Blues look well-placed to continue this run at the weekend.
With this in mind, betting on Chelsea to score three or more goals at the Stadium of Light could be a good play.
At odds of 13/5, punters would win £90 if they used their £25 free bet on this outcome and Chelsea obliged by striking at least three times against Sunderland.

Alternatively, a bet on Chelsea to overcome a one-goal deficit and beat Sunderland could pay dividends given the Black Cats have only found the back of the net once so far this season.
This option is available at odds of 9/5, making it much better value than backing Chelsea in the 3Way result market.
As for the score, a 3-1 win for Chelsea looks the best bet based on the above evidence, with this option available at odds of 12/1.
