A point and two places separates Everton and Aston Villa ahead of their Premier League fixture at Villa Park on Saturday and there is little difference between the two teams in bwin’s 3Way football betting market either.
But while the result looks hard to call, a bet on under 2.5 goals looks a far safer prospect at odds of 13/20 given the recent goalscoring records of the two teams in question.
Villa have failed to find the back of the net in three of their last five Premier League matches, while Everton have not scored more than once in a league game since a 2-0 away success over Bolton on 26th November.
Significantly, Villa and Everton also boast solid defensive records, with both ranked in the top half in terms of fewest goals conceded even if they are outside the first ten places in the overall league table.
It is always worth considering a bet on Everton to score more goals in the second half than they do in the first.
And although the three goals scored by Villa against Chelsea on New Year’s Eve hint at misplaced attacking potential, Everton are unlikely to leave themselves as vulnerable to the counter-attack as Andre Villas-Boas’ men did at Stamford Bridge.
As such, a tight, hard-fought game between two well organised but uninspired teams looks to be on the cards, with goals highly unlikely to be on the agenda.
If a team is going to win the game then Villa appear the most capable, not least because Everton are missing their two first-choice central defenders in Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distain.
Indeed, Villa are the narrow favourites to pick up all three points at 7/5, although Everton will be buoyed by Swansea’s recent 2-0 success at Villa Park so will back themselves to follow suit at 2/1.
However, history suggests the draw is the best option in bwin’s 3Way football betting market at 21/10.
This has been the result in five of the last six fixtures between the two sides and, with Villa the league’s draw specialists this season with eight in 20 games, a repeat would hardly come as a surprise.
A successful £25 free bet on Aston Villa to draw with Everton would return £77.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
Finally, it is always worth considering a bet on Everton to score more goals in the second half than they do in the first, with this option available at 7/4.
Fifteen of their 20 league goals have been scored after the interval, with ten coming in the final 15 minutes of games.
With this in mind, the chances are that Everton’s goalscoring success will come in the second half – providing, that is, they have any success at all.
