Blackburn Rovers visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday hoping that Chelsea won’t rub salt into what is already a rather gaping wound.
Already relegated, the farce involving the Lancashire club rolls on after they decided, instead of firing a much-derided gaffer, to give the brown envelope to somebody who criticised him via a private email.
However, their opponents Chelsea, though favourites to win at 11/50, are unlikely to turn their last home game of the season into a bloodbath. Though Roberto Di Matteo has often insisted on playing the best possible team for every game, regardless of context, an injury to the likes of Didier Drogba or Juan Mata will hardly be welcome news just days before the club’s second Champions League final.
The Spaniard has recently impressed when replacing Drogba, and could be the difference between the two sides.
Therefore, in choosing a (relatively) second-string team, Di Matteo makes the anytime goalscorer market less appealing.
He does, however, make Chelsea’s odds of winning a game with less than three goals rather appetizing at 15/4.
And with a 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 victory in the multiple correct score market not that tempting at 21/10, it may be wise to bet on what the exact score might be, with 2-0 an interesting play at 27/4.
But, most importantly, who will get Chelsea’s goals? With Didier Drogba very likely to be rested, punters will inevitably turn their gaze to Fernando Torres, who is quoted at 11/4 to net the first goal of the game. The Spaniard has recently impressed when replacing Drogba, and could be the difference between the two sides.
As for outside punts, with other key players likely to be out, or replaced early in the second half, ex-Barcelona starlet Oriol Romeu, who is an interesting 20/1 to net the final goal, could be one to watch.
A useful midfield foil, the young playmaker has been known to try his luck from distance. Would it be much of a surprise to see one fly in? Not when you consider the season Blackburn have had.
Recommended bet: Torres to score first @ 11/4
