Gareth Bale is now odds-on to stay at Tottenham Hotspur this summer after boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed that the Real Madrid and Manchester United target is still in talks over signing a new contract with the club.
Los Blancos went as short as 9/10 to bring him to the Bernabeu in the current transfer window earlier this week after Spanish daily Marca suggested that the Welshman had agreed terms over a proposed £85m move.
However, Tottenham’s determination to cling on to their prized asset has not wavered and Spurs fans will be heartened to hear that discussions over a fresh deal are “ongoing”.
“There was contact between the club and his agent last year and there is ongoing contact between the club and his agent,” said Villas-Boas.
“We renewed his contract at the beginning of last season, if you remember, and it’s something that is being dealt with by the chairman and the agent.
“Talks are ongoing but that doesn’t mean there is an agreement. At the moment we’re confident that the player is under contract at Tottenham, as was done last year. It’s something that we’re speaking about, but there aren’t any developments.”
Those comments have seen Spurs’ odds of keeping Bale – who scored 31 goals for club and country last term and won the Football Writers’ and PFA Player of the Year awards – slashed from 4/5 to 2/5.
Real Madrid are still thought to be desperate to land the former Southampton man this summer and they can now be backed at 8/5, out from that earlier price of 9/10, to seal the deal.
The bwin bookmakers are unmoved by AVB’s latest revelations in their view on the chances of Bale joining United, holding the Reds at 6/1 to bring him to Old Trafford before September 4th.
Spurs are next in action on Saturday morning, when they face South China in the third/fourth-place play-off at the Barclays Premier League Asia Trophy, and can be backed at 7/50 for the win.
