Robin van Persie might have started on the bench when Manchester United played West Brom on Saturday but he was still able to score as a substitute in a 2-0 win.
Van Persie now has 14 league goals to his name this season having had a dream start to life at Old Trafford and the Dutchman is the 6/5 standout favourite to finish the season as the Premier League’s top scorer for the second year in a row.
Newcastle’s Demba Ba and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez are a single goal behind Van Persie on 13 strikes after both players netted twice at the weekend.
Ba is a fairly generous 9/1 to pip Van Persie to the golden boot after his double put some fright into Arsenal in an eventually calamitous 7-3 defeat.
But it looks increasingly likely that Ba will ply his trade away from Newcastle for the rest of the season and it will be fascinating to see if those odds are cut should Ba seal a move to Chelsea, where he should find no shortage of service for the application of his deadly finishing.
Suarez, on the other hand, is a 3/1 golden boot shout after putting in another dominant performance as Liverpool’s attacking pillar. The Uruguayan helped the Reds race into a two-goal lead in a 3-0 win over QPR.
The transfer window looks likely to change things for Suarez too. Liverpool have been strongly tipped to seal the signing of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea in a bid to offer Suarez more strike support.
Another man at the centre of January transfer talk, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, has emerged as an outside golden boot contender after a sublime hat-trick in his side’s win over Newcastle.
Walcott is 33/1 for the golden boot.
He has some catching up to do given he only has eight Premier League goals this season but either one of two likely scenarios could boost his claims. A prolonged run as Arsenal’s preferred frontman could be on the cards if he can settle contract terms, while a move away from the Emirates could also make him more of a constant goal threat.
