Aston Villa appear to have admitted defeat in their pursuit of Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley, with reports emerging that the Villans have moved for Real Sociedad playmaker Sergio Canales.
The 23-year-old Spaniard, who started his career at Real Madrid, has emerged as a top target for Paul Lambert as he bids to improve his side’s ball-retention capabilities.
Cleverley was the Scot’s preferred option, but whether it’s owing to the Red Devils’ asking price or the player’s willingness to sign elsewhere, Canales has ousted the Bradford-born string-puller from the summit of Villa’s shortlist.
The 7/2 about that the England international being lured to Villa Park before the passing of tonight’s transfer deadline should, therefore, be a lot longer.
Everton, however, remain an interesting proposition in this market, available to back at 4/5, which is shorter than the 7/4 that he stays at Old Trafford.
It would appear that the midfielder is not a fixture in Louis van Gaal’s plans and will probably be on the move in the closing stages of the window.
So, with Villa seemingly withdrawing from the Cleverley running – if not admitting the unlikelihood of pulling off the move by targeting Canales – the Toffees look exceptional value in this market, especially with Valencia their next-nearest competitor in the betting at 6/1.
