Both Aston Villa and Wigan have faltered of late after enjoying promising starts to the season, although Alex McLeish’s side look by far the better placed to kick-start their campaign with a win at Villa Park on Saturday.
Villa are still unbeaten in the league but four successive draws have stunted their progress.
However, they still look good to pick up three points against the Latics given Wigan’s run of three consecutive defeats.
Roberto Martinez’s men started well enough, earning two draws and a win against the three teams promoted to the Premier League at the end of last season.
However, their three subsequent results against established members of the top flight suggest their encouraging opening could have been something of a false dawn.
As such, Villa go into the game as 3/5 favourites in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with a draw priced at 14/5 and a Wigan win at 9/2.
The Latics will draw comfort from the fact that they are unbeaten in their last six matches at Villa Park, picking up two wins and four draws.
This suggests there could be value in backing a draw or Wigan win in the double chance market at odds of 13/10.
Even so, a combination of Villa’s defensive solidity, Wigan’s lack of cutting edge up front and home advantage suggests it is the Birmingham side who will come out on top.
The Villans have the joint-second best defensive record in the league having conceded just five goals all season, with only two being let in at Villa Park.
Meanwhile, Wigan have scored just once on their travels and five in total, and they are 5/4 to fail to find the back of the net on Saturday.
Although Villa are not the most prolific team either, seven goals scored in six matches indicate they have just enough firepower at their disposal to eke out a narrow victory, particularly as Wigan look unlikely to score.
The best bet could therefore be on Aston Villa to win a match with under 2.5 combined goals at odds of 29/20.
