Arsenal have moved ahead of Real Madrid in the betting for Luis Suarez’s next club after Liverpool rejected a second bid from the Gunners for their star man.
The offer of £40,000,001 was swiftly dismissed by the Reds, but it is believed to have activated a clause that forces them to inform the Uruguayan of Arsenal’s interest.
Suarez, who came on as a second-half substitute in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory, is now set for showdown talks with boss Brendan Rodgers over his future.
While his preferred destination is Real Madrid, the Spanish giants are yet to register an interest and reports this morning have suggested that the 26-year-old is keen to speak to Arsenal.
News of the rejected bid has prompted the bwin bookmakers to install the Gunners as the new favourites to sign Suarez this summer, slashing them from 51/20 to 6/4 to get their man.
And with original target Gonzalo Higuain seemingly on his way to Napoli after Real Madrid moved the goalposts on the fee when a move to the Emirates appeared close, boss Arsene Wenger appears to be putting all his eggs in the Suarez basket.
Liverpool had been odds-on to keep the former Ajax hitman at Anfield beyond the end of the current transfer window, but they are now 21/20 to fend off all comers until January at the earliest.
Certainly owner John W Henry appears determined to hang on to Suarez, or at least drive a much harder bargain from Arsenal, judging by a tweet he wrote this morning.
“What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?” he said.
It remains to be seen whether Real will use the reported £32m banked from Higuain’s impending sale to gazump Arsenal in the race for Suarez, but Los Blancos are now 9/5, out from 7/5, to get their man.
All other clubs are priced at 16/1 and upwards to lure the striker before September 4th.
