Arsenal are the new odds-on favourites with bwin to be Gonzalo Higuain’s next club after the Gunners seemingly jumped above Juventus in the race to sign the Real Madrid star.
The Argentine international, who struck 19 goals in Real Madrid’s disappointing campaign last term, is thought to be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu following Jose Mourinho’s departure last month, with president Florentino Perez open to offers of up to £25.5 million for the forward.
It was thought that Juventus were keen on taking Higuain to Italy and were prepared to battle Arsenal all the way for his signature – but the Gunners are now said to be in pole position to make their first stellar signing for four years.
Juventus had held talks with Higuain’s representatives, but with no movement likely until Madrid announce a new manager (thought to be PSG’s Carlo Ancelotti) the Serie A champions have reportedly decided to look at cheaper alternatives, leaving Arsenal as the only serious bidders.
And breaking with recent tradition, the club are prepared to smash their own transfer record – the £15 million paid to Zenit for Andrey Arshavin in 2009 – in order to land the former River Plate man.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has a transfer kitty in excess of £70 million after chief executive Ivan Gazidis opened the purse strings for the first time since the club’s move to the Emirates and the Frenchman wants Higuain to spearhead his side’s attack next season.
And with reports suggesting Arsenal are prepared to offer the full asking price in one lump sum, bwin now make the Gunners just 2/5 to sign Higuain in this transfer window, having been as long as 2/1 last week.
Juventus have drifted to 17/10 to sign Higuain, having opened as strong 3/5 favourites in the betting, while the Argentina striker is 3/1 (out from 5/4) to still be at the Bernabeu next season.
It is at least 25/1 for any other club to sign Higuain before September 1st.
