Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger might have strengthened his squad in a last-gasp foray into the transfer market before the close of the summer window but he is still short of players heading into Saturday’s game against Swansea.
Thomas Vermaelen is the latest player to be ruled out, with the Belgian defender set to be on the sidelines for up to six weeks after undergoing surgery to his left ankle on Monday.
Vermaelen joins Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere on the treatment table, with Kieran Gibbs, Theo Walcott and Sebastien Squillaci also injury doubts for the showdown with the Swans.
Gibbs missed Arsenal’s last match against Manchester United with a hamstring injury, as did Squillaci, who has a thigh complaint.
Meanwhile, Walcott missed England’s match against Bulgaria yesterday after complaining of a tight hamstring.
Gervinho, Carl Jenkinson and Alexandre Song will also be missing at the Emirates on Saturday through suspension.
As such, Wenger is likely to thrust new signings Andre Santos, Per Mertesacker, Yossi Benayoun and Mikel Arteta straight into action in a bid to plug the holes in his team.
However, punters would still need to be brave to bet against Arsenal beating Swansea, as odds of 7/20 on a victory for the Gunners suggest.
A draw is priced at 7/2 in bwin’s 3Way betting market, with a Swansea win at 8/1.
Those who think Brendan Rodgers’ men can avoid defeat can bet on a draw or Swansea victory in the double chance market.
At odds of 21/10, a successful £25 free bet on this outcome would return £77.50.
