With the pursuit of Mesut Ozil believed to be nearing completion, according to the rumourologists, Arsenal are hoping to be able to add more than one new name to their shirt range and have enquired about a loan deal for Chelsea outcast Demba Ba.
The Gunners – rated as 16/1 shots to hoist the Premier League trophy this season following their north London derby win over Tottenham – are said to have offered their cross-capital foes a £1.5m loan fee for the Senegalese international.
With Arsenal’s first choice centre forward Olivier Giroud struggling towards the end of the north London derby, and Lukas Podolski booked in to the treatment pod for several weeks, Arsenal urgently need striking back up.
However, the Blues are holding out for something in the region of £3m, which they believe they can prise out of either Valencia or Napoli.
Ba may have started Chelsea’s 2-1 triumph over Aston Villa, but has not made an appearance either side of that, and following the arrival of Cameroonian star Samuel Eto’o, the former West Ham and Newcastle man looks poised to spend an extended spell on bench-warming duty.
Having scored just two Premier League goals following his switch from Tyneside last winter, it is difficult to see how the west Londoners can justify their £3m asking price to borrow a player they signed permanently for just over double that.
These though, are the type of economic squabbles that Arsenal have developed a reputation for, and which have led to them missing out on potential signings as a consequence.
