Arsenal might have boosted their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League with a sensational 5-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday but they remain behind Spurs and Chelsea in bwin’s top four football betting market.
With the positions of Manchester City and Manchester United in the top four all but secured, third-placed Tottenham are leading the way to secure one of the remaining two spots and have a comfortable seven-point cushion over both Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League table.
This is reflected by their odds of 11/100 to finish in a Champions League qualification place, although punters might be having slight doubts about Spurs’ chances following their north London derby defeat at the Emirates yesterday.
The Gunners’ price of 6/5 could represent a good opportunity for punters, with a successful £25 free bet on Arsenal to finish in the top four set to return £55.
Ten points clear of the Gunners going into the game, Harry Redknapp’s men could have all but ensured they would finish above their neighbours with a win and they looked to be heading for victory after establishing a two-goal lead after 34 minutes.
But goals from Robin van Persie, Bacary Sagna, Tomas Rosicky and a Theo Walcott brace fired the Gunners to a comprehensive victory, exposed Tottenham’s weaknesses and hinted that it would be premature to hand Spurs third spot in the table despite the advantage they enjoy over their two London rivals.
With Manchester United up next for the Lilywhites, their cushion may have been whittled down to four points this time next week.
While Arsenal have a stern test themselves in the form of Liverpool at Anfield, Chelsea have a more winnable match in the shape of West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Indeed, Chelsea are seen as Tottenham’s main rivals in the race for a Champions League spot by the bookmakers, with the Blues odds-on at 19/20 to Arsenal’s 6/5.
However, this appears to ignore the fact that Chelsea have at least as many problems as Arsenal and are actually below them in the table (albeit only on number of goals scored).
As such, the Gunners’ price of 6/5 could represent a good opportunity for punters, with a successful £25 free bet on Arsenal to finish in the top four set to return £55.
Betting on Tottenham, by way of contrast, would only secure winnings of £27.75 while a punt on Chelsea which paid off would be worth £48.75.
Written off in the lead-up to the game, Arsenal could yet be the best bets for a top four place for those punters looking for significant returns.
