Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will turn his attention to Swansea City’s 18-goal midfielder Michu, following reports from South America that top target Luis Suarez is poised to stay at Liverpool this summer.
Suarez – who is currently in Tokyo on international duty – has been touched by the affection shown to him by the Anfield faithful and could even sign a new contract, according to Uruguayan newspaper El Observador.
Wenger stated last week that a move for the striker – who is 12/1 to be Premier League top goalscorer this year – was still a possibility, but with that avenue seemingly closed until next summer at the earliest, the Emirates boss has had to identify other targets.
Spanish international Michu – who was also linked with the Gunners in January before signing an improved contract at the Liberty Stadium – may not have things all his own way in Wales this season, with last year’s Eredivisie top scorer Wilfried Bony signed for £12m from Vitesse Arnhem.
Swansea would expect to make a huge profit on Michu, who was widely considered to be last summer’s best bargain after Michael Laudrup shelled out a modest £2m to secure his services from Rayo Vallecano, but with Arsenal desperate to show they can compete in the transfer market, the clubs would be likely to agree on a fee.
Out of favour Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko – who bagged 14 goals in all competitions last season, without being a regular starter – is also said to be on Arsenal’s radar, although it is difficult to see City letting another striker leave before the start of the season, with new signings Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo yet to make their Premier League debuts.
