This weekend sees a handful of fixtures as the league makes way for the FA Cup. Notably, Southend have the chance to move up to second as Crawley Town and Cheltenham aren’t playing.
Friday, 6th January
Burton Albion v Accrington Stanley (7:45pm)
Home win: 6/5 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 2/1
Key Stat: Accrington Stanley are top of the form table with five wins and a draw from their last six games.
Betting Tip: Burton Albion are above their opponents in the table. However, the fact that Accrington Stanley have a superior head to head record with six wins in the last ten meetings between the two sides suggests a home victory is far from assured. And with Stanley in such good form, I think the away side will leave with the three points at 2/1.
Saturday, 7th January
Aldershot Town v Oxford United (3pm)
Home win: 31/20 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 3/2
Key Stat: Only Hereford and Macclesfield have scored fewer goals than Aldershot’s 24 this season.
Betting Tip: Another away win on the cards for me but my tip will be a 2-1 win for Oxford at 17/2. The last two victories in this head to head ended that way and also it is the Shots’ most frequent scoreline.
Crewe Alexandra v Plymouth Argyle (3pm)
Home win: 19/20 Draw: 12/5 Away win: 12/5
Key Stat: Plymouth sit bottom after last week’s derby defeat at home to Torquay United.
Betting Tip: I’m going to go for Crewe to be winning at half time and at full time at 21/10. It is a popular double result for Crewe, happening on five occasions, and it is also Plymouth’s most popular result with them losing at half time and full time on six occasions.
Morecambe v Northampton Town (3pm)
Home win: 17/20 Draw: 12/5 Away win: 14/5
Key Stat: Only AFC Wimbledon are in worse form than Northampton Town, with the Cobblers only picking up two points from the last six games.
Betting Tip: Despite their form, the point that Northampton picked up away at Shrewsbury moved them off the bottom of the table due to goals scored. I expect Morecambe to win this weekend and with the away side conceding the most goals in the league, the home side to win with a handicap of 0:1 at 9/4 stands out to me.
Southend United v Port Vale (3pm)
Home win: 7/10 Draw: 12/5 Away win: 7/2
Key Stat: Only Crawley Town, who are top, have scored more goals than both Southend and Port Vale.
Betting Tip: The most popular double result for Southend is them to be winning at half time and at full time. This has happened on eight occasions. I fancy them to get back to winning ways and this double result is available at 9/5. And with the two teams scoring 42 goals each in the league this season, over 3.5 goals could also be worth a punt at odds of 2/1.
